the challenge
The IBM Skills ecosystem for IBM Z plays a critical role in preparing developers, students, and enterprises to work with one of the world’s most powerful enterprise computing platforms.
However, the Skills initiative lacked a distinct visual identity that could clearly communicate its value and unify the many programs, events, and educational resources connected to it.
The challenge was to create a recognizable and flexible brand system that would work across multiple channels—digital, events, education, and marketing—while remaining fully aligned with IBM’s global brand guidelines.
Additionally, the identity needed to support a wide range of communications, from social media and presentations to merchandise and event materials, and be simple enough for global teams, universities, and partners to use consistently.
the solution
Somnio partnered with IBM to design a complete brand identity system for IBM Z Skills, creating a unified visual language that strengthens recognition while remaining aligned with the broader IBM ecosystem.
We began by developing three distinct mark concepts, exploring visual directions that reflected the themes of learning, innovation, and technical mastery. Through collaborative reviews and refinement rounds, the final mark was selected and optimized for use across digital and physical environments.
From there, we built a scalable visual system including:
A defined color palette designed to complement IBM branding
A typographic hierarchy optimized for clarity and accessibility
Custom graphic elements and visual motifs to create recognizable layouts
An icon aligned with the skills and learning theme
To ensure teams could easily activate the brand worldwide, we designed a full suite of plug-and-play templates and assets in Adobe Express, Figma and PowerPoint including:
Social media templates
Presentation templates
One-pager program templates
Event flyers and marketing materials
Email headers and digital banners
Landing page design mockups
Merchandise concepts such as tote bags, badges, stickers, and T-shirts
Video and podcast motion assets
All elements were designed with simplicity and flexibility in mind, allowing students, partners, and IBM teams to create materials quickly while maintaining brand consistency.
